VISITING LINCOLN
A day in Lincoln from our shepherd huts, then home to your hot tub
In short
Lincoln is about 14 miles by road from our huts at Temple Bruer, around half an hour by car. The cathedral, the castle and the medieval Bishop’s Palace stand together at the top of the hill, so one day can cover all three. The International Bomber Command Centre is on Canwick Hill, on the southern edge of the city.
Lincoln Cathedral
For more than two centuries in the Middle Ages, Lincoln Cathedral’s central spire made it the tallest building in the world. It still dominates the skyline, and on clear days walkers on the Lincoln Edge near Navenby can see it from miles away.
Lincoln Castle
Built by William the Conqueror in 1068, Lincoln Castle is home to one of the four surviving copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, and you can walk around its medieval walls for views across the city.
The Medieval Bishop's Palace and Steep Hill
The ruins of the Medieval Bishop’s Palace, cared for by English Heritage, sit just below the cathedral. From there, Steep Hill lives up to its name as it drops from the cathedral quarter to the city centre, lined with independent shops, tearooms and pubs.
The International Bomber Command Centre
On Canwick Hill, about 12 miles from the huts, the centre tells the story of the 125,000 volunteer aircrew who flew with Bomber Command in the Second World War, around a 31-metre Spire memorial. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 5pm (closed on Mondays except bank holidays). Our aviation heritage guide covers the other RAF sites nearby.
Closer to home
Our own medieval landmark is closer still: the Knights Templar tower at Temple Bruer is less than a mile from the huts. The full directory of attractions, from Doddington Hall to the Everyman cinema, is on our things to do page.
