AVIATION HERITAGE

RAF history and air museums within half an hour of our huts

In short

Our huts are within half an hour’s drive of four places for aviation history: the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln (about 12 miles by road), the heritage centre at RAF Waddington (about 9 miles), the Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum (about 10 miles) and Newark Air Museum (about 15 miles).

International Bomber Command Centre

On Canwick Hill in Lincoln, the IBCC remembers the 125,000 volunteer aircrew of Bomber Command, with a 31-metre Spire memorial and a database recording the details of 67,500 Bomber Command deaths. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 5pm.

RAF Waddington

RAF Waddington, about 9 miles north of the huts, has a heritage centre. It is on an operational RAF station, so check visiting arrangements with the station before you go.

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum

At North Rauceby near Sleaford, about 10 miles by road, the museum tells the story of the Cranwell site from its beginnings as a Royal Naval Air Service station, with a Jet Provost flight simulator. It is run by North Kesteven District Council and admission is free; check opening times before you travel.

Newark Air Museum

Newark Air Museum is about 15 miles away, around half an hour by car, just over the border in Nottinghamshire.

Further afield

The Dambusters Memorial at Woodhall Spa is about 19 miles away. Closer to home, the Commonwealth War Graves at Scopwick are listed with the rest of our things to do, and the medieval Templar tower is less than a mile from the huts.
