The Viking Way, a 147-mile waymarked trail from the Humber to Rutland, runs along the Lincoln Edge through Wellingore and Navenby, a few minutes’ drive from our huts. The stretch between the two villages is a short walk with views west from the top of the scarp, and a pub at each end.
Where to start
Visit Lincolnshire’s walk guide starts at the Old Cross on Cliff Road, Wellingore (LN5 0HG). Walk south beside the main road, turn onto West Street and Memorial Hall Drive, cross the playing field, and then follow the top of the scarp for about 700 metres before the path turns towards Navenby church. Walk past the church and you are in Navenby.
What to expect
The route uses tracks, field paths and roadside paths. It can be uneven and muddy, and you may meet stiles, so wear boots. Look for the waymark: a Viking helmet on a yellow disc. On a clear day the views from the Edge stretch west across the Trent Vale, and further north the path has views of Lincoln Cathedral.
Food and drink
The Red Lion Inn in Wellingore, home to Wild Cat Pizza, is at one end, and Navenby has the King’s Head, a café and fish and chips at the other. Our guide to Navenby and Wellingore lists them all with phone numbers. If you want more of the Viking Way, it carries on north through Boothby Graffoe, Coleby and Waddington all the way to Lincoln, about 11 miles from Wellingore.
Then back to the meadow for a soak. Choose your hut and dates on our Book page.
